Three people have been arrested for allegedly stealing nearly $700 worth of copper wire cables in Fort Worth, police said. Fort Worth police said on Jan. 20, they responded to a suspicious person call in the 2900 block of Shamrock Ave.

Lake Worth's police chief is getting credit for this arrest. He saw three suspicious people as he was leaving the gym after a workout and immediately called police.

Three people were recently arrested in connection with the theft of over 150 pounds of copper wire, according to a news release from Fort Worth police. Officers responded to a suspicious person call in the 2900 block of Shamrock Avenuve on Jan. 20, where it was reported that three people appeared to remove copper cable from a building.

These thefts are impacting hospitals, post offices and every facet of life, said Sgt. Anthony White, who heads up the Fort Worth Police Department’s metal theft unit. This is a problem affecting cities across the country, he said.

Police across the Metroplex have arrested more than 250 people for stealing copper wire in the past year, but they say people are still trying to collect metal from phone lines.
