'Enticing empire of stars:' See Andromeda galaxy in newly released NASA images
About 100 years after astronomer Edwin Hubble's discovered the "magnificent" spiral nebula, the Hubble Space Telescope and NASA scientists have produced the most comprehensive survey of the Andromeda galaxy, or Messier 31. The Andromeda galaxy is approximately 2.5 million light-years away from the Milky Way.
Hubble Space Telescope reveals richest view of Andromeda galaxy to date (image)
Around 2015, astronomers took on the painstaking task of stitching together Hubble Space Telescope images of this galaxy, but that effort had focused on the galaxy's northern half. Still, however, the resulting image showcased a sweeping view of 100 million stars packed into about 1.5 billion pixels.
