The spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza has become year-round. Minnesota Turkey Growers Association executive director Ashley Kohls says until two years ago, most instances of the virus within commercial flocks occurred during spring and fall migration.
The number of commercial flocks infected with avian influenza dropped in February, while infections in backyard flocks held steady. Fifty-nine farms were infected last month and accounted for most of the 12.7 million birds lost.

A further 25 poultry flocks were infected with the H5N1 HPAI virus serotype, according to the national veterinary agency’s latest report to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). Directly impacting a total of around 120,000 poultry, the outbreaks began in the period between early April and the end of November last year.
