Gavin Newsom has directed California officials to temporarily raise the state capitol U.S. flag to full staff on inauguration day, in honor of Donald Trump. The height of U.S. flags has become a political touchpoint after the death of Jimmy Carter in December.

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom will join Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and some GOP governors around the country in directing U.S. flags be raised to full height on Inauguration Day.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has ordered that flags at the state Capitol temporarily fly at full-staff for the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on Jan. 20.

The governor lashed back after several Republican leaders said that aid to his state as it deals with deadly wildfires should be conditional.

Rep. Mike Levin said Wednesday that Republican calls for attaching conditions to disaster aid for citizens harmed by the Los Angeles wildfires are "shameful."
